PHOENIX -

The Phoenix Fire Department honored four men who tried to save their neighbor from her burning apartment.

They did what they could -- but they weren't able to get to her in time. The woman was trapped and she didn't make it out, but the men are still being recognized for their bravery in trying to save her.

The early morning scene at Central and Southern Avenues in late October was a horrific event and the fire cost 68-year-old Patricia Ferrel her life. 

"I was  awakened by our other neighbor saying we need water, we need water, we need a fire extinguisher and when I came out my door, I seen him and I just jumped right in, I didn't even think, I just jumped right in," said Rosco Young.

"It was a hectic morning.. something that just won't go away, so it will be there for a while.  Unfortunately for Patricia, she didn't make it," said Anthony Fritz.

The men were honored Monday for their bravery.  Rosco Young, Edward Valenzuela, Anthony Fritz and Manuel Soto -- all came to Ferrel's rescue that scary morning, breaking windows and forcing a metal security door open to pull her out -- only to find Ferrel would die from her injuries.

"I don't consider myself a hero, I just consider myself ready to help somebody in trouble," said Fritz.

"I appreciate the reward.. I just did it because she was my neighbor, I am excited.. I just thought I was doing what a neighbor was supposed to do," said Young.

A neighborly thing to do -- now a hero too.
