UTICA, Mich. (WJBK) -

For the past 25 years, Mary Kerner and the students at West Utica Elementary in Macomb Co. have celebrated Veterans Day in a special way.

The entire school gathers to sing patriotic songs, listen to speeches from both students and veterans, and honor those who have served.

Kerner started the assembly to honor her father, who served in World War II. "I always say my dad bled red, white and blue," said Kerner. "He joined (the military) on his 18th birthday. He's a hero."

Donald Henderson, a WWII veteran and member from local VFW Hall No. 4659, spoke with students Monday about his experience in Italy, where he spent two years in the early 40s.

"You get to recognize the veterans that fought and died so we can have the freedoms we have today," said 6th grader Brian McAllister.
