Voice of the D'Backs helps out Peoria Little Leaguers

Posted: Updated:
PEORIA, Ariz. -

Earlier this week we told you about some valley little leaguers who were left in the dark when vandals tried stealing the copper wire from their ball field lights.

But Thursday night, the lights were back on -- and it was game on once again.

Only this time, these young ball players were treated like pros, thanks to a familiar voice.

He's the voice of the Arizona Diamondbacks. But Thursday announcer Chuck Drago brought his big league talents to some excited little leaguers in Peoria.

"I heard about this on Fox News about how these kids weren't able to play Tuesday night because some criminals damaged the lights out here and it was kind of disheartening, kind of a bummer for these kids," says Drago.

All of it happened on the same night that the kids were trying to raise money for a local charity.

"It's pretty sickening," says Shannon Oughton, Little League mom.

Shannon Oughton says the hardest part was trying to explaining to her son why they couldn't take the field.

"We had to go home and explain to our kids that unfortunately thieves were the reason we couldn't play our baseball game tonight."

So the voice of Chase Field went to D'backs management to offer up his services.

"Said you know if you want, I'd like to come out and announce the games and it might turn something that was a bummer for these kids and turn it into something kind of cool," says Drago.

"We're huge Diamondbacks fans and when I told my son and the rest of the team they couldn't wait to get out of bed today to go to school because they could come here after school!"

Don't be surprised if you see some of these little guys in the big league soon -- but on this night, they were treated to the next best thing.

"Just an awesome facility out here -- the lights are on which is great for these kids to get to play ball and I miss baseball. It's been over a month since I announced my last game so I kind of like coming out here and doing it again."
