Pike Nursery: Amaryllis and Paperwhite Bulbs

Posted: Updated:

Halloween has past and Christmas is just 7 weeks away. Now is the perfect time to plant amaryllis and paperwhite bulbs to get dazzling, festive blooms just in time for Christmas!

Melodie McDanal joined the Good Day Atlanta crew on Friday. Watch the video above for more.

Tips from Pike Nursery:

Amaryllis
- Easy to grow
- Develop huge showy flowers ranging in color from white, pink to red
- Pike Nurseries has the best selection of amaryllis bulbs – at least 6 different varieties at every location

Paperwhites
- One of the simplest bulbs to grow and are a member of the daffodil family
- Very fragrant clusters of white blooms

Planting Amaryllis and Paperwhites
- Use a pot that is about 4 inches deep
- Place an inch of soil or gravel at the bottom of the pot
- If the pot has holes, plant the bulbs into potting soil
- If the pot does not have a hole, use gravel to hold the bulbs in place
- For amaryllis, plant one bulb in the pot
- For paperwhites, crowd as many bulbs into the pot with the roots facing down
- Allow about a pinky finger width between bulbs
- Fill the pot with soil or gravel until just the "noses" of the bulbs are poking out
- Water
- With gravel, add just enough water to reach the roots – water coving the bulb itself can cause root rot
- With the soil, simply keep moist
- Keep in a cool, dry and indirectly lit location until the leaves begin to emerge.
- Once the leaves emerge, move to a sunnier location in your house
- You should have blooms in 6-8 weeks
- Pike Nurseries carries amaryllis and paperwhite bulbs, pots or have ready-to-go kits to make planting super easy
