SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. (AP) - An Army veteran who lives in southern Arizona has finally received a military decoration he was awarded during the Vietnam War.
The Sierra Vista Herald reports that retired Staff Sgt. Alejandro Gonzales belatedly received his Army Commendation Medal with Valor device for his combat service during a ceremony at Fort Huachuca this week.
Gonzales was awarded the medal for his actions when a barracks was hit by rockets during an attack on a base in1967. Gonzales went into the burning building and led fellow soldiers through the flames to safety.
He didn't get the medal for more than 46 years through an oversight.
Gonzales is now 80.
