Tumor Problem Helps Couple

Posted: Updated:

A husband and wife from Texas feel fortunate the husband's medical problem was diagnosed.

He didn't know he had a brain tumor that was causing a major change in his behavior, and almost drove his wife to end their eighteen-year marriage.

FOX's Nee ha Curtis takes a look

No one had a clue what was behind Jerry's gradual personality change from someone who was kind and laid back to someone who snapped at anything

"I was getting more upset with the guys at work, I'm usually pretty easy going and I was taking a lot of stuff out on them," Jerry said.

Until one day when Jerry collapsed and doctors found out he had a non-cancerous brain tumor the size of a plum pressing against his frontal lobe.

"The best analogy that you can draw to it is someone who has been at the bar too long and is a little bit too free with their speech," Dr. John McGowan

One day, Jerry realized something wasn't right.

"I have never laid a hand on her, and one time I raised my hand at her... that was not you... that was not you," Jerry said.

Doctor McGowan removed Jerry's tumor and things have gotten back to normal.

"I pretty much mellowed out, have a better relationship with my wife. The kids don't upset me as much as they used to," Jerry said.

If Jerry hadn't collapsed, and hadn't had that brain scan, they might have never known what was causing his erratic behavior.

"If it's changes and it's gradual and it's not their normal personality... get it checked out," Becky said.

Doctor McGowan says some people don't find out until its too late and their lives spiral out of control: losing their families, jobs, and even ending up in jail.

"There have been cases of patients from the departments of corrections for chronically recidivistic criminals that finally make it to a doctor where they end up doing a cat scan of the brain and lo and behold they have a very benign but large tumor that is causing frontal lobe dysfunction," McGowan said

As for The Harpers, they're back to normal. Jerry is back to making meatloaf for dinner.
