WASHINGTON -

Republican Rep. Jon Runyan of New Jersey intends to retire rather than seek re-election next year.

Runyan, a former professional football player, defeated a Democrat to win his seat in 2010, one of dozens of newcomers who gave the GOP the majority in the House.

The two-term congressman's decision gives Democrats a chance to win back the seat.

Word first came from Republican officials who spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly speak about the decision by name before a formal announcement.

Later came a formal announcement from Runyan's office, which appears below:

Runyan Statement on Not Seeking Re-Election in 2014

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Jon Runyan (NJ-3) made the following statement regarding his recent decision to not seek another term in 2014:

"After a great deal of thought and discussions with my family, I have decided not to seek re-election in 2014.  Politics shouldn't be a career and I never intended to make it one.  While it has truly been an honor to serve the people of New Jersey's 3rd Congressional District, at this stage in my life, and more importantly, the lives of my three children, spending time with them is my top priority.  As I serve out the rest of my term, I will continue to work hard on behalf of the people of South Jersey."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
