Hollywood To Include Obamacare In TV Plots

Posted: Updated:

Expect Obamacare to be popping up in some of your favorite TV shows.

A private foundation called The California Endowment just provided $500,000 to TV writers and producers to have information about the Affordable Care Act stitched into plot lines.

The goal is to encourage Americans, especially the young and healthy, to enroll in a health insurance plan.

University of Southern California's Norman Lear Center received the grant. The Norman Lear Center is a multidisciplinary research and public policy center exploring implications of the convergence of entertainment, commerce and society.

Because the grant is so recent, no specific TV shows have been targeted yet, and no plot lines have been written.

Martin Kaplan of the Norman Lear Center said "We know from research that when people watch entertainment television, even if they know it's fiction, they tend to believe that the factual stuff is actually factual."

California Republican strategist Jonathan Wilcox has taught a politics and celebrity course at USC, and believes the narrative TV promotion will not have an effect on the public.

"This is an attempt to use entertainment pop culture to fix a political challenge," he said. "It will be received as a partisan political message, no matter how cleverly it's delivered."

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
