CHANDLER, Ariz. -

The American Heart Association says "It takes heart to be a hero."  On Friday, nearly a thousand Chandler District Elementary School earned that title jumping rope for heart health.

Stacy Brasel, the physical education teacher at Riggs Elementary, says students have participated in Jump Rope for Heart since the school opened in 2007.  The event itself is celebrating its 35th anniversary.

"Usually each year, we raise about $5,000, so we do really well here.  The kids are amazing at contributing and being good citizens," she said.

Every twist of the wrist is making a difference for the American Heart Association, but the students are benefiting as well.

Participating classrooms get 30 minutes to jump.  The younger kids team up with buddies, older kids who guide them.

In the end, it's a team effort and everyone seems to come out a winner.

Districts throughout the valley will participate in the Jump Rope for Heart event all year long.  Most do it in February.
