A small school of fish will quickly grow into a full-scale farming operation. The school of just 13 fish are expected to spawn 500 to a thousand offspring in the next month and a half, powering a self-sustaining ecosystem.

"Every female can lay 50 to 100 eggs, and we have 10 females and three males," explains Anthony Hatinger.

He's the aquaponics supervisor at the CDC Farm and Fishery on Second Avenue. It's run by 'Central Detroit Christian,' a nonprofit focused on education, employment and economic development.

In addition to the fish farm, upstairs the agency grows herbs like rosemary and sage. They'll use fish waste and a worm bed to produce nutrients for the herbs, which then purify the water that's pumped back downstairs for the fish.

"It's just amazing to have a total in-house ecosystem," says Kino Smith from Central Detroit Christian.

"It's a really nice way of taking a system that nature's perfected and bringing it indoors. In a city where we don't live on any oceanic coastline, we have fish that is now grown locally," says Hatinger.

They say if all goes as planned the fish will be ready to be moved into bigger tanks in about six weeks. They'll be harvested when they reach a pound and a half.

The operation will supply neighborhood restaurants and businesses. It will also supply training and jobs.

The agency is also finalizing plans for online cooking classes encouraging healthier eating. CDC is in the process of signing up chefs. If you're interested click the link below.
