#ThrowbackThursday: 1982 Peachtree HS pep rally

Posted: Updated:

Early Thursday morning, Paul Milliken and our High 5 crew packed up t-shirts, foam hands, and a hand trophy and started towards Hart County High School for our 10th High 5 Pep Rally of the year.  These weekly pep rallies are now a staple of High 5 Sports, but they certainly are nothing new to WAGA.  This week's video is a Channel 5 pep rally from December 1982.

TAPE:
SP-106  DATE: 12/3/1982 SLUG:HI SCHOOL PEP RALLY (PEACHTREE) TIMECODE: 26:20

The location of the pep rally is Peachtree High School, one of a handful of DeKalb County high schools that has now become a middle school (Shamrock, Henderson, Sequoyah are others).  A quick look on the Georgia High School Historians Association website (www.ghsfha.org) reveals that the Patriots were red hot that year, 14-0, coming off a win over Griffin and on their way to Valdosta for the AAAA state championship game.

In the video, we see Beau Bock getting the totally 80's crowd hyped up.  I'm not sure what the deal is with the masks and all of the sunglasses inside, but I suppose in 30 years someone will wonder what our fascination was with the hand.

Near the end of the pep rally you see Bock delivering an inspired speech.  Did it work?  As the highlights will show, the Patriots went down to south Georgia and added to the lore of "Winnersville" on a muddy night, losing 10-7.  Peachtree coach T McFerrin wouldn't get his first state title that night, but he would finish his coaching career with a pair of championships including one last year at Jefferson.

Talk radio has blown up this week with criticism of Fredi Gonzalez for not bringing in Craig Kimbrel at the beginning of the 8th inning in game four against the Dodgers.
Talk radio has blown up this week with criticism of Fredi Gonzalez for not bringing in Craig Kimbrel at the beginning of the 8th inning in game four against the Dodgers.  It isn't the first time a Braves manager has been raked over the coals following a relief pitcher call that resulted in a go-ahead homer and a playoff loss.
