Matt Barnes: It's A Taste Of All Of Our Cultures

Posted: Updated:

LA Clipper Matt Barnes has a lot going on this weekend that's NOT basketball related. He will be at the Sports Authority this Saturday in support of athletes versus cancer...and co-hosting a charity art show for at the MB Abram Gallery. He's also gearing up for a new NBA season with a new coach and a new home court, sort of. Steve and Maria asked Matt about new head coach Doc Rivers and he compared Doc to a coaching legend.

"He has one of those presences, when I speak about Doc, that I felt around Phil (Jackson)...when he's not there you can tell and when he is there you absolutely feel his presence. Doc is our leader and I think everybody knows that, Chris (Paul) and Blake (Griffin) are our superstars but Doc is definitely our leader."

Steve asked Matt about the new controversy surrounding Clippers home games at Staples Center. Banners featuring Clippers players are now hung from the rafters..no Lakers banners, no retired Laker jerseys. Matt's take?

"With all due respect to the people who earned the banners and the retired jerseys...when we're playing at Staples Center it's our home court, we play on the Clippers floor. When they're playing, they don't play on the Clippers floor...so when it's our home field we want more of a little home court advantage...when it's their court they do what they want, when it's our court we do what we want."

Steve also brought up the time Matt played for Orlando...they were hosting the Lakers and he was set to inbound the ball...Kobe was guarding Matt and he faked throwing the ball at Bryant's face...he never flinched. Maria asked if there was any fallout afterwards.

"It was a physical game the whole game...we've always competed against each other ever since I got in the league and we have the utmost respect for each other and he was actually one of the first people I spoke to when I became a free agent out of Orlando to get me to the Lakers."

Shelly Sterling acted properly in removing her husband as a director of the family trust that owns the Los Angeles Clippers, and she has the authority to sell the team despite Donald Sterling's objections, a judge tentatively ruled on Monday.
