Woman Killed In Northeast Philly Crash, Man And Baby Hurt

PHILADELPHIA -

A pregnant woman passenger is dead, police say, and a man and a baby are in the hospital following a crash near the Roosevelt Boulevard in Northeast Philadelphia overnight.

SkyFOX flew over the scene of the crash, which occurred just before 11:30 p.m.

Police tell FOX 29 News that two Mercury Marquises headed toward the boulevard on Red Lion Road were going "well above" the posted 35-mph speed limit.

Police say it was just past the intersection of Route 63 and Haldeman Avenue when the car in the left lane lost control and hit an approximately 8-inch-high curb in the median, then the cars collided. Both eventually hit trees.

Police said the woman -- a passenger in the more heavily-damaged car that went up in flames -- died at the scene. The driver suffered a broken leg and hip, while the 6-month-old baby suffered minor injuries.

The occupants of the other car, a young couple and a 1-year-old, are all OK at the hospital.

Both drivers had blood taken, and police are continuing to investigate the cause of the wreck.

"We're still looking at it, piecing it together, and it will take at least tonight, tomorrow," Lt. John Wilczynski. "We'll look at the scene, get some video. But right now it looks like they were both heading in the same direction, they both collide. There were three people in both cars. Like I said, unfortunately one person in this vehicle has perished."

A woman who says she witnessed the crash and called 9-1-1 said she believes the cars were racing. She says one occupant, despite a visibly broken leg, pulled out another occupant while others pulled out the child seat in which the 6-month-old was sitting, saving the baby's life.

The witness described the scene as "tragic and gruesome." Police are looking into her claim that there may have been other occupants who fled after the crash.

The partly melted child seat remained on the ground as police continued to investigate Tuesday morning.

FOX 29's Steve Keeley has more details in these video reports from the scene.
