Box of possible explosives found in Mesa determined safe

Updated:
MESA, Ariz. -

The bomb squad determined a suspicious box found in Mesa didn't contain explosives. A transient came across the box filled with possible explosives at Country Club and Southern Monday night.

The person ended up leaving the box at a nearby Harley Davidson dealership.

At first glance, it appeared the box was full of dynamite, and authorities took no chances.

The bomb squad sent in a robot to detonate the box. After using several tests to figure out what was inside the box, they determined it didn't contain explosives.

The area around the suspicious box was cordoned off for hours while the investigation was carried out.

Police say calls like this aren't uncommon this time of year.

"We do definitely get more calls this time of year for things that would normally be not that suspicious, but this time of year they all seem to pop up," said Mesa Police Detective Steve Berry.

Police haven't said what exactly was inside the box.
