First Same-Sex Marriage Held At Midnight In New Jersey

LAMBERTVILLE, N.J. -

Same-sex couples in the New Jersey are celebrating this morning. It's the first day they can get married, and some started at the stroke of midnight.

The first couple make it official spoke with FOX 29 News just before their ceremony.

After decades of waiting, the state's first same-sex couple tied the knot in Hunterdon County.

Joanne Schailey and Beth Asaro became the first gay couple to marry in the Garden State at 12:01 a.m.

The two took their vows in a Lambertville courtroom after being together for 27 years.

What many other couples take for granted, this couple had to fight for.

"After the Supreme Court denied the appeal, that was like winning the Super Bowl. It's like we're now all playing on an equal playing field," Schailey said.

The two got married in New York and had a civil union in New Jersey in 2007.

But now, they're thrilled to make it official in their home state.
