PHILADELPHIA -

Police are continuing to look for the gunmen who shot a 23-year-old man during an attempted carjacking overnight in the Society Hill section of Philadelphia.

The incident unfolded near Second and Walnut streets -- right outside a Sheraton Hotel where attendees for the International Association of Chiefs of Police conference are staying in town.

Police tell FOX 29 News that the victim was attempting to open the door to his Jeep Cherokee when he was approached by two guys with guns.

"Both had guns, and they say, 'Give it up,' and he was trying, he almost had the car door open, and they start pistol-whipping him. And there was like blood all over the place. And he tried to break free from them – he did break free from them, finally, and he ran about a half-a-block down Walnut and he was shot one time in the back," Capt. George Fuchs, of the Philadelphia Police Dept.

The bullet exited through the chest area. The victim is listed in critical but stable condition and expected to survive, thanks to 6th District officers, who put the man in a police car and rushed him to Jefferson University Hospital's emergency room.

The man bled so badly in front of City Tavern that the Philadelphia Fire Dept. responded to wash the sidewalk.

The victim's keys were still in the door of his Cherokee, FOX 29's Steve Keeley showed during live reports from the scene Monday morning.

Keeley reported that the vehicle was parked right in front of Bookbinders, the same spot where many celebs had their cars valet parked for decades. Old Original Bookbinders closed for good in 2009 but is expected to reopening as part of a new business venture in 2014.

Later on Monday morning, police detectives were out scouring the neighborhood for any possible surveillance video of the suspects.
