PRESCOTT, Ariz. -

Prescott Police say a man was arrested after he was seen yelling and cussing at a 4-year-old boy -- and witnesses said he also struck the child on the head with a plastic trash can.

The alleged incident happened on Oct. 16 at an apartment complex in the 100 block of South Bradshaw Street.

Officers later found the boy, who appeared to be upset, but not injured, in his grandmother's apartment.  They say the grandmother told them the child had just been with her boyfriend, 49-year-old Dion Bennetts, to take the trash down to a disposal area in the complex.  She claimed that nothing appeared to be wrong when the boy returned and didn't know where Bennetts was after dumping the trash.

According to the police report, officers also spoke to two women who had called the police.  They said that the man was using very offensive and degrading language toward the young boy.  They said at one point, Bennetts, hit the boy on the head with the trash can, knocking him to the ground and causing him to cry. Both women said that the man noticed them watching and began yelling and using offensive language toward them.  The women said they immediately called police because they were very concerned about the boy's safety.

Police say a short time later, an officer found Bennetts in the complex and detained him.  He blamed the child for not listening to him and being disobedient.

Bennetts was taken into custody and charged with aggravated assault and disorderly conduct per domestic violence.  He was also charged with two additional counts of disorderly conduct based on the verbal attack directed towards the witnesses.
