PEORIA, Ariz. -
A family of five was displaced after a fire burned their home's garage and destroyed two cars.
When firefighters arrived at the scene near Jomax and Lake Pleasant Parkway Tuesday morning, they found the garage fully engulfed in flames.
Authorities say the fire may have started in the garage and spread to the attic.
"I heard what sounded like gunshots at first.. don't know if that was tile breaking or not, but it woke us up," said Daniel Hurn.
Crews were able to put the fire out quickly, but the garage and the two cars inside were destroyed. One car parked in the driveway was badly damaged.
Smoke detectors alerted the family and they were able to get out of the home safely.
"One thing I'd like the public to take away from this.. this family was fortunate that they had working smoke detectors in the house. A lot of times, we don't see that and a tragedy is involved," said Capt. Ron Brewster of the Peoria Fire Department.
PFD says some ammunition went off and the cars' tires also exploded. A third car was damaged, but most of the home was saved.
No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
