NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -
One of the final health initiatives introduced by the Bloomberg administration is going to be a crusade against tanning salons.
City officials reportedly would like to take control of the oversight of the salons from the state. A plan, which is being submitted to the Board of Health on Tuesday, would require all tanning salons be inspected once every two years. Machines that didn't meet standards would be shut down.
The proposal also calls for cracking down on unlicensed salon owners. According to The Post, there are 106 tanning salons in the city with permits but officials suspect there are others operating illegally.
Along with warning the public about the dangers of ultra violent exposure, salons would require operators of UV equipment to undergo training.
A little enforced law banning patrons under the age of 17 would be enforced in the crackdown.
"Salon owners should be held accountable for following regulations and not allow a few bad actors to sully the industry,” said American Suntanning Association Advisor Joseph Levy.
