Vigil held for mother of 10 killed outside Atlanta restaurant

ATLANTA -

Dozens of mourners held a candlelight vigil on Friday for a mother of 10 who was shot and killed earlier this week.

Family members say 34-year-old Charlese Brooks was shot and killed on Tuesday night while trying to break up a fight outside of the Brick House restaurant in Atlanta.

Brooks dedicated her life to others, according to her family. She had four biological children and custody of six others.

"She gave us whatever we needed, whatever we wanted. She was just...I don't know, it was just like she was the best mother in the world that I could ever have," said Rodretta Benton, Brooks' daughter.

Mourners said she also acted like a mother to dozens of others.

"That's what she was to me -- a superwoman," said Tynessa Turner, Brooks' aunt.

Turner said Charlese was always doing something positive for her family as well as organizing support for people in need in her community.

"She really has touched many people's lives and she will leave a great legacy behind," Turner said.

Brooks' family is determined to make sure that legacy is not overshadowed by her death.

"I feel like they care about her and yes, I know we're going to be okay. There are a lot of folks that are going to make sure we're okay," said Benton.

Benton said that her goal was to grow up and be the same kind of woman that her mother was.

A makeshift memorial has been placed outside the restaurant where Brooks was killed.

Hours after Brooks was shot, police say Terri Williams turned herself in. She's been charged in the crime.
