Man accused of attacking anger-management classmate

FERNDALE, Mich. (WJBK) -

A Ferndale man is charged with assault by strangulation on a woman he had a relationship with after meeting her at an anger management class.

Jeffrey Richards, 55, has a violent past, police say. In July he was arrested for domestic violence and was given probation and ordered to attend those anger management classes.

At those classes he met and developed a social relationship with a 52-year-old Southfield woman. "She had been seeing this man for a couple months," Det. Ken Denmark tells Fox 2's Andrea Isom, when one night last month, Richards "wanted to take it further, which she did not have any interest in. He did not take it very well," Denmark explains.

"He grabbed her by the throat, took her to the ground inside the apartment, choked her and began punching her in the face and head area," Denmark says. The woman was knocked unconscious. But, when she came to, she began comforting Richards to get him back on her good side. When he let her stand up, she took a run for it and escaped.

Ferndale police then caught up with Richards, still at his home. He is in police custody now and faces a 10-year felony. Police say the victim is recovering from her injuries, and Richards is due back in court on Monday.
