Man Uses Viral Photo To Raise Awareness For Daughter's Heart Condition

Posted: Updated:

One father is using this to raise awareness about his daughter's heart condition and copyright concerns.

These days 2-year-old Serafina Murphy is happy and healthy.

It's been almost a year since she was admitted to Lurie Children's Hospital after being diagnosed with a congenital heart defect.

Her family posted a picture of Serafina on Facebook a year ago. In a strange twist, last week the picture popped up on Starteen's Facebook page with the caption, "A 2-year-old girl after open heart surgery... give her a LIKE to wish her a quick recovery..."

In a Skype interview with Fox 32's Tisha Lewis, Sean Murphy said he was shocked to see his daughter's picture on the site, especially because he doesn't even know what Starteen is or what it's about but he found a way to make it work in his favor.

"So I saw it pop-up on this Facebook page Starteens and it was within 11 hours of it popping up there and I posted a comment saying look, I'm Serafina's father and if you want to do more than just like this picture, then you can give back to the hospital that saved her life and will do the same for countless other children with your help," said Murphy.

Since then, nearly five million people have liked the snapshot of little Serafina in kitten slippers and a hospital gown hooked up to an IV.

Murphy Skyped from his home in Champaign where he is studying law at the University of Illinois. He said though copyright infringement came as a surprise he's using the famous photo to raise money and awareness about heart disease in his daughter's honor.

"I didn't really know what to think of it but then I decided to run the Chicago Marathon in honor of Serafina. I'm at nearly $4,000 and my goal is to raise at least $5,000. The picture means so much to us, we're just touched that it means so much to millions of people around the world," said Murphy.

Sean Murphy's comment on Starteen's post of his daughter received more than 8,000 likes and people have clicked on the link he posted more than 50,000 times. He says donations have come from as far as Russia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

Starteen has not responded to messages from Murphy or Fox 32 News.

Video games may be pure fantasy, but a violent action-adventure game called "Watch Dogs" has ignited a very real debate in one South Jersey community. Watch Dog allows players to adopt the persona of a James Bond-like computer hacker, chasing an evil mastermind. People say it's chock-full of foul language, sex and violence, features dark and foreboding backdrops. The latest version, which is due out this fall may be set in Camden.
