Police continue search for suspect in Washington Hts. sex assaults

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Police continue to search for a man they believe sexually assaulted two women early Wednesday at their home in the Washington Heights neighborhood before also attacking a 14-year-old girl who was walking to a nearby bus stop.

Investigators were previously questioning a "person of interest," but have since come to believe that the man was not behind the attacks, which took place mere blocks from each other on the South Side.

Police described their suspect as a dreadlocked, 6-foot, dark-skinned man, weighing about 160 pounds with slender build. At the time of the assaults, the man, who is believed to be in his 20s, was wearing a pair of baggy blue jeans with a long belt, white gym shoes and a black t-shirt, police said.

The man, who committed the assaults during a three-and-a-half hour window beginning about 3 a.m., first attacked the two women at home in the 10300 block of South Emerald Avenue, police said.

After sneaking in through an open kitchen window, he sexually assaulted the two -- ages 43 and 22 – while the slept, police said.

He attacked the 14-year-old girl several hours later, only after failing to sexually assault an 11-year-old girl in her bedroom, police said.

Edward Whiten heard his dog Sasha barking and then heard his 11-year-old daughter scream.

"She was growling, she was barking, she was in a little bit of a state that she is not normally in," Whiten said.

He ran to the girl's room and saw a man peeking out of her closet, police said. The suspect then jumped out of the same window he had apparently crawled in through and ran down the block.

"She was able to see somebody in her closet, like looking out at her and when she was certain about it, that's when she decided to scream out," Whiten said. "That's what made me come rushing to her room, but by the time I got there, he was already half-way out the window."

After running down the block, the man saw the 14-year-old girl walking to a bus stop to catch a ride to school about 6:40 a.m., police said.

As he exited an alley in the 10000 block of South Peoria, the man approached the girl from behind, putting a knife to her throat and coercing her to a nearby yard where the sexual assault took place, police said.

All three victims were taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital. The 11-year-old girl was not injured.

Anyone with information can call Area South detectives at (312) 747-8271.
