Poodles dumped at Troy PetSmart

TROY, Mich. (WJBK) -

In the last six months 12 dogs have been left at the PetSmart in Troy. The store employees have taken it upon themselves to care for the dogs and make sure they get to the right shelters, but they want to make it clear the store is not a shelter dropoff.

"We just did what we needed to do to save the little guys," Teresa Musico from PetSmart tells Fox 2's Maurielle Lue. "If you just call us, we'll be happy to give you some numbers, people that can help you - no questions asked. Please don't drop off your dog. They're going to run out on the road and get hit. We don't want that to happen," she continues.

The puppies do not have names, and it's believed they haven't eaten or been bathed in weeks. The dogs' hair was matted and covered in feces and urine.

"The odor is indescribable, very foul. They are very skiddish, probably little to none human contact," Kirk Taylor of the Animal Welfare Society of Southeastern Michigan says.

"The three that came in yesterday, there was a little female; she weighed three pounds. We did bathe her. We cut the two pounds of mat off of her and then she was able to stand. We cut her nails that were curled all the way under so she couldn't even stand at all. As soon as we started to show her love she started kissing us," Tamera Murawski, another worker at the animal society, says.

Troy Police are investigating. Employees believe the same people are dumping the dogs because of the similar conditions all the puppies were found in.

Of the three white poodles rescued on Monday, one is in isolation and the other stay together and keep each other warm and in good company. The Animal Welfare Society has taken in nine of the 12 dogs abandoned at the store since April.

The animal society says the dogs will need extensive medical care, including surgery, before they will be healthy enough to be adopted. If you are interested in adopting the dogs, or want to make a donation to help pay for their medical expenses, contact the Animal Welfare Society. The society operates solely on donations.
