MESA, Ariz. -

A newborn baby is in the hospital recovering after her 16-year-old mom gave birth and then put the child in a storage room.

Sunday afternoon, police were called to a home near University Drive and Power Road in Mesa where a 16-year-old was bleeding extensively from giving birth.

There was a language barrier and deputies didn't find the newborn initially, but later discovered the baby in a shed on the property.

The newborn baby girl had a skull fracture, but is expected to survive. It's unknown how the fracture happened.

Right now, detectives are treating this as a potential criminal investigation. No names have been released.

"Sheriff's detectives are looking into exactly how the infant baby got outside. Who placed him there. Many interviews are being conducted still as we speak. To get to the bottom of this investigation. Obviously this is a troublesome story, involving a 16-year-old to begin with, and a newborn," said sheriff's spokesman Joaquin Enriquez.

The infant and the 16-year-old are still in the hospital. Her parents apparently didn't even know she was pregnant.

The 16-year-old's father told FOX 10 he was saddened, angry, and in shock.

Authorities say the unidentified mother could have dropped the infant off at a nearby hospital or fire station under Arizona's "safe haven" law.

The 2001 law allows anyone to anonymously drop off unharmed infants within 72 hours of their birth.

Child Protective Services has also gotten involved. The investigation is ongoing.
