Cook Co. part-timers may pay more for health care

Posted: Updated:

CHICAGO (AP) -- A proposal in Illinois' most populous county would require some government employees to pay the full share of their health benefits, or find insurance coverage elsewhere.

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle announced the proposal in a news release Monday. Preckwinkle's office says the proposal would save about $4 million annually. It will be part of Preckwinkle's budget recommendation to be released later this week.

Cook County estimates the proposal will affect about 400 people, including full-time county circuit court and associate judges, part-time crossing guards and commissioners for the Chicago Board of Elections.

Circuit court judges earn $182,429 a year from the state of Illinois. They also receive $500 in income from Cook County and pay less than $1 a month for their county health care coverage.
