FERNDALE, Mich. (WJBK) -

A Ferndale Patrol Officer was flagged down on Nine Mile Road near Hilton Road on Friday, Oct. 4th, at approximately 10:45 a.m. The officer was flagged over by two drivers driving two different vehicles. The group pulled into a parking lot, and the first driver told the officer a road rage incident had just taken place which involved the second driver, suspected as Latanya Tippet-Rhodes, throwing a hot cup of coffee onto the first driver.  While the officer continued to investigate the situation Tippet-Rhodes drove away from the parking lot and took off with her son, Drake Rhodes, in the passenger seat.

Police say Tippet-Rhodes drove at a high rate of speed, approximately up to 80 miles per hour, along Nine Mile, Eight Mile and Hilton roads. She then turned onto Hilton and slowed down to let her son out of the still-moving car. Rhodes then lead police on a chase across Eight Mile Road.

He ran through seven lanes of traffic and, while crossing the eighth lane, was hit by a car. He tried to continue running but was caught by police. Rhodes suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Officers arrested Tippet-Rhodes, who then claimed to be having medical problems. While being checked out by medical examiners, she spit on one of the officers, police say. She was taken to the hospital then was cleared for incarceration.

The prosecutor authorized a multi-count warrant for Tippet-Rhodes who was arraigned Saturday. She was charged with Fleeing and Eluding, Resisting Police, and Driving While License Suspended. Bond was set at $75,000.

Both mother and son had several warrants out for their arrest out of Washtenaw Co. Rhodes warrants included one for Resisting and Obstructing. Tippet-Rhodes' warrants included two for assault.
