U.S. Federal Government Shuts Down Overnight

Posted: Updated:

This morning, the federal government – at least a large portion of it – is shut down for the first time in nearly 20 years.

Congress missed the midnight deadline to pass an emergency spending bill to keep the government operating.

Both sides are refusing to budge.

"But you do not use the threat of shutting down government to try to advance your policy agenda," House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said last night on Capitol Hill. "That's just not the way it works, and that is what is called irresponsible, and that is why this is the Tea Party government shutdown."

"This is not about me, and it's not about Republicans here in Congress," House Speaker John Boehner said. "It's about fairness for the American people."

Now what this means is 800,000 nonessential federal workers will stay home from work today without pay.

But the people on Capitol Hill making these decisions will still get their paychecks.

The shutdown also means a delay in home mortgages, slow airport security lines and limited food safety inspections, plus a whole lot more.

But it's not just the politicians aware of the shutdown Tuesday morning.

Americans are really paying the price.

Here in our area, some of the most popular tourists attractions are closed Tuesday. FOX 29's Steve Keeley was live on Independence Mall with more on that story in the video report above.

Some programs are not affected by the shutdown. For instance, Social Security checks will still go out. And government operations related to national security or public safety, like prison guards, air traffic controllers and border control, will continue.

The shutdown will also not affect the U.S. military.

President Barack Obama told service members in a televised message they will still be paid.

The president signed a law ensuring troops will get their paychecks on time, as well as have what they need while fighting overseas.

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
