Gunman shoots homeowner, carjacks painter in south Fulton Co.

RIVERDALE, Ga. -

A contractor who was carjacked on the job Friday in South Fulton County tells FOX 5 he pleaded with the gunman to spare his life.  Police say that's just one of two incidents involving the same gunman that took place in less than five minutes.

FOX 5's Portia Bruner reports the contractor was painting a home in Riverdale around 10:30 a.m. when the armed man ambushed him from behind.  Justin Garland, 26, says the man showed him a black revolver as he demanded his wallet and his cell phone.  He said whatever he could to get the gunman to go away, telling the gunman, "Take everything."  

Garland says he tried to stay calm as he told the gunman about his two children.  

"He said, 'I respect you for that, I've got two kids too,'" Garland recalled.

Garland says the man pulled his pants off of him as he was searching for the keys to his van.  Once he found them, he took off. Garland says he didn't get a good look at the suspect.

About five minutes earlier, police say a homeowner was painting the back deck of his home near Bethsaida Road and South Hills when the same man approached him.  The homeowner was shot in the leg and taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he spent the day in surgery.  He is expected to make a full recovery.
