Kenya Mall Survivor Returns To The States

Posted: Updated:

An American woman who escaped a terrorist attack at a Kenyan mall has safely returned to the U.S.

Thirty-year-old Bendita Malakia and her loved ones sobbed as they embraced each other at their airport reunion.

Malakia says she was eating lunch when fighters from the terror group Al-Shabab, based in Somalia, took over the Westgate Shopping Mall.

"I was eating on the terrace and then we just heard an explosion and started, crawling out and we were in the back of this home goods store, it was just, it was pretty crazy," she recalls.

After hiding for more than four hours, she was finally rescued.

"I'm so glad to be here with my parents, I'm very glad, it was very, very, very scary, just a scary experience, She says.

The Kenyan Red Cross says at least sixty people are dead and the bodies of more victims may still be inside the complex.
