Deer sightings for drivers is on the rise again during this time of year. On average, 60,000 accidents happen each year in Michigan that involve a vehicle and a deer. Fox 2's Robin Murdoch and Capt. Mike Johnson of the Oakland Co. Sheriff's Dept. bring you tips to avoid that type of collision.

Our instinct tells us to veer out of the way when we spot a deer on the road, but investigators say - don't. It could make matters worse. Although the average cost to repair a car involved in an crash with a deer is $2,000, hitting a deer head-on could save your life. If you try to veer away from the deer, you could go off the road and hit a tree or go into another lane of traffic, possibly hitting another car head-on.

If you are in an area where deer sightings are common, slow down to give yourself time to prepare or brace for impact. If you spot one deer, chances are likely others are in the area. Deer travel in herds and it's common for 3 -4 to be spotted together.

In 2008, Rochester Hills led the state in the number of car-deer accidents. But after an education campaign that included billboards that say 'Don't veer for deer,' they were able to drop those numbers significantly.
