I-Team: Not knowing rules of shopping a costly mistake

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Fall is here and over the next few months, shopping will pick up. And, there's no time like the present to remind ourselves of the rules and regulations of today's ever-changing return policies.

The I-Team's Dana Fowle is here with important information that you need to know, before you go. We probably take being able to return something we've bought for granted. Most retailers do it.

But, did you know that in Georgia, retailers are not required by law to offer refunds or to exchange merchandise.

So, if something is advertised ‘Final Sale,' then that's what it means. If you buy something you think you might return, make sure you are clear about the return policy. It's often posted at the register or on the receipt. But, it doesn't have to be. If it isn't, then ask!

A retailer will generally do 1 of 4 things: Offer a full refund under certain conditions. Some shops might only offer an exchange of merchandise – or, they might give you store credit.

Here's a reminder in light of all of the electronics that we buy today. There is often a re-stocking fee. That means when you return the item, you will get your money back minus a certain fee.

The Governor's Office of Consumer Protection reminds us that online retailers and their brick-and-mortar stores might have different return policies.

And, even though Georgia law doesn't require a return policy, a store can't be vague or deceptive, either. If the retailer offers some sort of return option, then management needs to live up to that. And, if they don't, that's when you have recourse.
