CORDES JUNCTION, Ariz. -

A helicopter crashed just before noon on Saturday off I-17 in Cordes Lakes.

Witnesses saw the helicopter making a strange sound as it made its way into a remote area before things to a turn for the worst.

The crash left charred pieces of the helicopter strung across the blackened ground, but no survivors.

The helicopter's tail, the only recognizable part, reads "United States."

The FAA says the helicopter was privately owned.

"I was just watching it and it just come apart in mid air, parts flying everywhere. Came just straight down and exploded," said Stanley Oliver.

Oliver is camping in the area near Cordes Lakes, about half a mile from the helicopter.

He says he watched as it flew north.

"The helicopter was making this noise, like when it lands where the blades are just beating the ground making a popping sound," said Oliver.

Witnesses say the helicopter flew past homes and into a remote area off the I-17 before diving nose first into the ground.

According to the FAA, the helicopter is a 1974 Bell UH-IV.

Yavapai County Sheriff's Deputies says at this time it's unclear how many people were on board.

Oliver drove his quad to the remote site shortly after the crash.

He says everything was burned.

"It just exploded into a ball of fire. Nobody survived, no doubt," said Oliver.

At this time, the cause of the crash is unclear.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board say they are on the ground investigating.
