PHILADELPHIA -

The head of the Philadelphia Fire Department announces he's stepping down.

Philadelphia fire commissioner Lloyd Ayers says he plans to retire next year.

Ayers joined the fire department in 1974. He quickly rose through the ranks from lieutenant to deputy commissioner before becoming fire commissioner in 2004.

Ayers plans to retire next June.

Before joining the fire department, Ayers spent four years in the Coast Guard. He currently lives with his wife in the Andorra section of Philadelphia. They have six kids.
