CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Chicago is at the tipping point, and Joaquin Guzman is largely responsible. The Mexican drug lord's cartel floods the Chicago area with nearly $3 billion worth of heroin, cocaine, marijuana and methamphetamine each year.

Bloomberg Markets magazine senior writer John Lippert joined Good Day Chicago on Thursday to speak on his in-depth report, "Heroin Pushed on Chicago by Cartel Fueling Gang Murders."

His report shows how Guzman and the Sinola Cartel are fueling gang murders on the streets of Chicago.

Lippert spoke on why Guzman is so feared and how he achieved such a powerful position in Chicago, despite never setting foot here. His cartel supplies 80% of all the drugs in the area. Federal authorities also refer to the Eisenhower (I-290) as the "Heroin Highway."

The Chicago Crime Commission has named him Public Enemy No. 1. Most of Chicago's violent crime comes from gangs trying to maintain control of drug-selling territories, and those murders contributed to the homicide numbers that serve as evidence for the city's new title: Murder capital of America.

Lippert spoke to how different the drug world is today than it was 20 years ago, and if there is anything we – the public – can do to stop the influx of drugs, drug use and gang violence in the Chicago area.
