Crime Victim Gets Gift Of Lifetime From Family, Friends

BOOTHWYN, Pa. -

Only On FOX: A Delaware County man gets the gift of a lifetime.

Things are looking up for Kevin Neary, who was shot in a robbery attempt in 2011, leaving him paralyzed.

And local construction crews have stepped up to help him, donating an addition to his home.

FOX 29's Dave Kinchen takes us for a tour inside Neary's new space and he tells why it's so important.

There was a warm round of pleasantries was exchanged between Neary, of Boothwyn, and the construction workers that built a major addition to his life.

It's an extension on to the family home allowing for the space and medical care he needs.

"It's a little bit more comfortable," Neary said.

And that's what it's about for the 30-year-old who tragically lost control of his limbs after being shot near his Northern Liberties apartment in a November 2011 robbery attempt.

The suspect was arrested days later.

Down the road, a group of Kevin's friends came together and designed the addition complete with a specialized shower area and a bedroom with state-of-the-art technology.

"Having these overhead lifts, a lot of these new designs have really helped to get me a little bit more safely," he said.

A large living space was also added, freeing him from previously tight quarters.

"He can have his privacy," said Kevin's father, Joseph Neary. "He can have his friends come over and feel comfortable that he's inviting them into his own space."

The project took several months and is worth more than $130,000. And just about all the parts and labor were donated by Kevin's high school friends and workers just happy to help.

"The majority of it was all weekend work. It was all charity," FOX 29 was told.

"Emotionally, I was just, you know, here to help," said one of the friends.

And it's the closeness of family and friends that continues to help Kevin get through the challenges ahead.

"It's been overwhelming, and it's been something that's been very appreciative of," he said.

Kevin says his new place will be a big help for the 24-7 treatment he gets from his nursing staff.

He continues to receive physical therapy, too, and his family says he hopes to one day regain at least partial use of his hands and legs, Kinchen reported.

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
