'Master Bob' ordered to trial in wife's death

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT, Mich. (AP) -

A suburban Detroit man charged with his wife's murder has been ordered to trial after days of unflattering testimony about his alternative lifestyle away from home.

Jane Bashara was severely attacked and strangled at her Grosse Pointe Park home last year. Robert Bashara is accused of arranging the killing so he could live a new life with another woman. He was known as "Master Bob," and had a sex dungeon in the basement of a bar.

Judge Kenneth King called the case "bizarre" after a weeklong hearing. He found probable cause Friday to send Bashara to trial on a first-degree murder charge. A handyman, Joe Gentz, is in prison after saying he was forced by Bashara to kill Jane Bashara.

On the final day of the preliminary hearing the court heard from another former mistress of Bashara's, Venita Porter. She testified she lived in Bashara's "sex dungeon."

On Friday the judge also reprimanded Bashara for what he believed were subtle cues Bashara was giving to the witnesses, including patting of the heart and licking of the lips.
