Tossing trash from your car in Chicago could cost you $1,500

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

City Council passed an ordinance Wednesday, cracking down on drivers who toss trash out of their cars.

Chicago police said they know it's a problem. They have seen people do it. They issue tickets for it, but apparently it doesn't stop people from throwing garbage out of their cars.

Alderman Howard Brookins said garbage is really an ugly problem in the 24th ward. Everyone said they disapprove, but the evidence is right here on the street. Plastic wrappers, bags, empty cups and half eaten food lines the street and sidewalks – outside trash receptacles placed there.

Brookins wanted to really step up the fines and penalties for the offense. Many didn't think the original idea would get approved. But on Wednesday, it did. The alderman made clear littering is wrong.

"If you have refuse in your car, keep it there until you can throw it in the appropriate receptacle," Brookins said. "You will not be fined. Your car will not be towed. It will help all of us keep our city clean"

If you decide not to follow that advice from the alderman, you could face a $200 - $1,500 fine for throwing garbage from a vehicle. Police could use their own discretion and impound your car.

The ordinance goes into effect after 30 days.
