Man hiding under Dearborn police car seeking 'suicide by cop'

DEARBORN, Mich. (WJBK) -

If it wasn't for Doug Berry, this story may have ended differently.

Doug was visiting the train station with his 20-year-old son, Patrick. The two go there often, but this time they noticed something out of the ordinary.

Doug tells Fox 2's Robin Murdoch he saw a man acting strangely, walking back and forth between his car and the Dearborn Police Department's parking lot. Doug says the man even drove around several times before he parked, and then he pulled out a bag.

Doug called 911.

Officers came out to the parking lot, and we're told that's where they found a 50-year-old man lying under a police car with the bag Doug saw being removed from the car, and what Doug says looked like a deer rifle. Then he saw an officer empty out the gun.

He went over to the scene and introduced himself as the man who called 911, and police told him the suspect was suicidal and wanted 'suicide by cop,' meaning to get oneself into a situation that would end with getting killed by a police officer.

That 50-year old man is undergoing a mental evaluation. A report will eventually be sent to the prosecutor's office to determine if any charges will be filed.
