Jonathan Lipnicki: Stage Is The Proving Ground For Acting

Posted: Updated:

Jonathan Lipnicki says he wasn't the first young actor to be cast as Renee Zellweger's son in "Jerry Maguire," the movie that would eventually make him a star.

Jonathan was just five years old at the time and he remembers only bits and pieces from making the movie; sometimes he has to ask his mother to refresh his memory.

One thing he does remember is that he wasn't the producers' first choice. "They cast another kid, shot two weeks with him and it wasn't working out.  They went to recast it and they wouldn't see me because I was on a list of kids who had already auditioned.  My agent really had to push to get me in the room, and I did and I got the part."

Now, Jonathan is nearly 23 and he's appearing on stage in L.A. in "Lost Girls" about a mom and dad dealing with the disappearance of their teenaged daughter during a blizzard.   Oh, and the little kid who once co-starred in "Jerry Maguire" appears naked in this play.  Not for long, but there is full-frontal nudity, Jonathan says.

Jonathan joins Steve Edwards and Maria Sansone on Good Day L.A.

Fun Facts About Jonathan Lipnicki:

  • He is best known for his childhood roles in the Hollywood films Jerry Maguire, Stuart Little, The Little Vampire, and Like Mike.
  • Lipnicki made his film debut in 1996's Jerry Maguire as the son of Renée Zellweger's character. He subsequently appeared on The Single Guy, The Jeff Foxworthy Show as well as episodes of Dawson's Creek
  • Lipnicki has appeared and/or spoken at events for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Starlight Children's Foundation and NBA's Read to Achieve. He is also the international spokesperson for Pediatric Chiropractic and Kids Day American/International. He was named one of "the heroes of 2001" by JDRF for his involvement. Lipnicki, who has four dogs, is also involved in animal rights groups, including Pets & Their Stars and the Nuts for Mutts.
