DETROIT (WJBK) -

A Wayne Co. inmate remains on the run after police say he stabbed a sheriff's deputy and carjacked a motorist while escaping from the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice.

Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon says the inmate used a plastic comb that had been fashioned into a shank to stab the deputy several times in the neck before he stole part of his uniform and fled the area in a minivan near the downtown courthouse.

Napoleon says the deputy was transported to a local hospital and is listed in temporary serious condition. He is expected to fully recover.

"It was very quick," Napoleon said. "He overcame the deputy, took his clothing, got on the elevator and escaped."

Detroit Police Chief James Craig identified the suspect as 25-year-old Abraham Pearson, also known as Derreck White. He is described as a black male, 5' 6" and 155 pounds with dreadlocks.

Craig says Pearson stole the minivan from a motorist near the courthouse and later abandoned that vehicle on the city's east side.

Pearson was scheduled in court Monday to learn his punishment after being convicted last month of carjacking, armed robbery and firearms charges, according to court records. He was being transported, along with two other inmates, when the attack occurred. Napoleon told reporters the deputy was unarmed at the time of the attack.

Pearson's defense attorney, James Howarth, told the Associated Press he has a history of mental illness but was found competent to stand trial. He said he believes Pearson's mental health issues may have played a role in his escape Monday.

"In his right mind he would not have done this," Howarth said. "In the year I have known him, he has never showed the slightest symptom of being dangerous. Something is very wrong."

Of the escape, Howarth said: "It may have been a final act of desperation if you don't want to go to prison."

Police are actively searching the area where Pearson abandoned the stolen minivan.

"We have good information that we're working on," Craig said during a late-morning update to reporters.

Pearson may have put on the sheriff's department uniform during the escape, but Craig said it was believed the inmate no longer was wearing it.

People who waited outside the courthouse for hearings on Monday morning were allowed to enter a few hours after the escape.
