McCain gets an earful: people in Prescott ask about Syria

Posted: Updated:
PRESCOTT, Ariz. -

Senator John McCain held a town hall meeting Friday in Prescott and said he would answer questions on Syria, immigration and any other issues important to Arizona.

But Syria was the only topic brought up and almost everyone who spoke was against any U.S. intervention in that country.

The Prescott City Council chambers were filled to capacity.  For an hour and a half, the crowd asked questions on only one topic: possible U.S. military intervention in Syria and it got contentious at times.

"And we gotta have an end game. What are we gonna do? How are we gonna get that sarin gas? It's probably going into Iran. We probably should be looking at Iran closer than Syria."

"If you fire scud missile into that country - that is an act of war. And if we're going to go to war -- we need the Congress to declare war -- no more of this presidential war making."

McCain answered each question, trying to reassure the audience that he was not for any boots on the ground in Syria, to try and stop the regime of Syrian President Bashar al Assad from killing more of his own people.

"And I'm sure you saw and were horrified as all of us were the pictures of the dead children stacked up. We all know how horrific that is and our heart goes out to them," he said.

But most at the meeting weren't convinced.

"Do you have a goal? Beyond 10 tomahawk missiles going into Syria?"

McCain says he will consider what he's heard at three recent town hall meetings. When it comes time for Congress to vote on possible use of force against the Assad regime.

McCain said again Friday the United States will appear weak if we take no action on Syria after the President said we would not tolerate chemical warfare being used by Assad.

The senator will head back to Washington - with the Senate expected to meet next week to authorize possible military action against Syria.
