Officer injures knee in pursuit of tattoo artist

Posted: Updated:
DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. -

A chance encounter with a police officer landed a tattoo artist behind bars after he was accused of tattooing at least one child.

Douglasville police were responding to a call of a suspicious person at a home on Tuesday when 22-year-old James Radley fled through the woods.

Radley emerged several blocks away, where Lt. Brad Loudermilk joined the pursuit. Loudermilk said he spotted Radley at a cul-de-sac. Loudermilk parked his vehicle and chased Radley on foot. He injured his knee while jumping over a wire fence.

"I came across the top, landed sideways on the other side and I heard it pop," Loudermilk said.

Radley was captured in a shed a few blocks away. It turned out that police were not looking for him, but he ran apparently because he is facing a charge of illegally tattooing a minor.

An arrest warrant alleges that Radley tattooed an underage teenager in her basement. Radley's mother, Kay, said that the teen showed her son an ID that said she was an adult.

Kay Radley said she didn't know why her son ran from police.

"If we could answer that question, we'd all be rich," she said.

Douglasville Police Chief Chris Womack says Radley made a bad situation much worse. Radley is still in jail and facing several misdemeanor charges on top of the illegal tattooing charge.

Loudermilk says he'll be out of work perhaps as long as six months recovering from a torn ACL.
