Land opposes force against Syria, Peters undecided

LANSING, Mich. (AP) -

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Terri Lynn Land is opposing a resolution authorizing U.S. military force against Syria.

She released a statement Thursday saying President Barack Obama hasn't made a compelling case to justify military intervention. Land says no one has explained how the intervention "is vital to America's national security interests."

Land is the only Republican candidate for the Senate seat opening up with the retirement of Carl Levin next year.

The lone Democratic candidate is U.S. Rep Gary Peters of Bloomfield Township. He's reviewing classified intelligence and remains undecided.

Land says Peters should vote no.

Obama has called for military action after blaming Syrian President Bashar Assad for a chemical weapons attack on Aug. 21 that he says killed more than 1,400 civilians. Other casualty estimates are lower.
