DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

Authorities say a teenager shot by DeKalb County police on Tuesday after a home break-in had nothing to do with that crime. Police also say that the officer did not intend to fire the shot.

Police were responding to a home invasion in Decatur on Tuesday morning. A woman had barricaded herself in a closet and called 911 as she said men ransacked her home.

When officers arrived, they realized they were searching for two suspects, according to DeKalb County Police Chief Cedric Alexander. During their search, they saw a 16-year-old in the area. Authorities said that because the teen was truant from school, he ran when he saw officers. When the officers saw him running, they thought he was a suspect they were looking for.

"At one point, one of our officers…saw him take off, took behind him along with canine as well, too. In doing the search, as we would in cases where we are tracking subjects, came up on him hiding in the shed," said Alexander.

Police say the officer who fired did not intend to shoot. Alexander said that the officer was startled when he saw the teen in the shed, and his gun went off. They are calling it an "unintentional misfire."

The teen, identified by his aunt as Marquez Redden, was shot in the arm and transported to the hospital.

Friends of Redden say that he ran because he was scared of getting caught skipping school.

Redden's cousin, Jovanni Fuller, said that even though the police have admitted fault, more should be done.

"I think they need to pay. Somebody has got to pay. I mean…where's the cop that shot him…he hasn't apologized," Fuller said.

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave.

The two suspects in the home invasion remain on the run.
