It's the first day of school for many of Michigan's kids. Also returning to the classroom - the Pledge of Allegiance.
The Michigan Legislature passed a law last year requiring all public schools to provide students the opportunity to recite the Pledge. The state also now requires American flags in all classrooms where the Pledge is recited.
Some lawmakers had expressed concern schools were moving away from the Pledge and children were losing their sense of patriotism. Others said they felt requiring it be recited was more of a local issue that one that should be mandated by the state.
To be clear, the kids must now be given the option to recite the Pledge, but they can not be forced to do so.
