Bullet Blocker, A Company That Sells Bulletproof Backpacks

Posted: Updated:

For some, getting those "back-to-school-supplies" is all about the savings.

But, after a string of school shootings nationwide, the only "savings" former Deputy Sherrif Joe Curran was interested in was saving his own daughter, in case of another attack.

"I had an old vest that I basically cut up, put it inside the backpack, and sent them on their way," Joe Curran recalls. "And friends and neighbors, some family, said, 'what a great idea.'"

And so, the bulletproof backpack was born, along with a new "made in America" company, Bullet Blocker.

The Massachusetts-based business, which specializes in bulletproof school supplies, has grown to seven full time employees, with both domestic and international sales.

And, it's not just about the backpack anymore.

"We started making inserts for notebooks. We started making jackets, and other things like that for the individual's personal safety so they could...shelter in place, if necessary," says Curran.

Backpacks to prevent bullets makes school safety expert Gregory Thomas a little, of all things, dejected.

"To have bulletproof backpacks…is a sad commentary on where we are in schools. But having it as last line of defense is better than having it as a first line of defense," says Thomas.

Thomas says he'd prefer to see schools embrace other safety measures, like keeping eyes and ears open for students who seem troubled.

But, Thomas admits that the Sandy Hook School shooting was a game changer.

"This will be on mind of every parent going forward, from pre-K to HS, because now it can happen at any school," he says.

There are two other companies that also make bulletproof backpacks.
