Nuisance Home Focus Of Problems On Port Richmond Block

Posted: Updated:

On the 31-hundred block of Miller street, curious homeowners sat transfixed by the site of a workman replacing the front-door lock on 3118.

He was there on behalf of Bank of America, the current owner of the long vacant and abandoned property.

For folks on this block...it was an overdue sign of progress.

Marc Collazzo has spent months trying to erase this blight, on behalf of state representative John Taylor.

He calls it the 'perfect storm' of abandoned properties...

"An owner who's gone, a bank who owns it out of state, squatters who don't care and neighbors who are afraid," said Collazzo.

Neighbors say agencies from police, to DHS...Animal Control to L-and-I, have been called upon, to deal with trespassers, neglected children, abandoned pets and foul odors.

Danielle Baldwin lives right next door.

"The smell is inside my wall. It's now on my couch. The house is always reeking really bad. Smells like something died in there."

Neighbors say some of the squatters used the place as a drug den-- and that led to angry confrontations.

Home owner Christy McVey said "We received several threats. My house was threatened that all the windows were going to be broken. So I was, of course, worried about him..."

Neighbors hope the new locks on 3118 will keep unwelcome visitors away.

It's the first step in cleaning up an eyesore that has nearly ruined a once-proud place to live.

The local listing agent for Bank of America tells Fox29 they will have 3118 Miller street thoroughly cleaned next week.

A local non-profit has reportedly expressed interest in buying the place, further renovating, then selling it-- as a home worthy of the neighborhood.

Fox29 will keep you updated on this story.
