2 women killed by suspected drunk driver

PHOENIX -

The intersection of 43rd Ave and Indian School Road was closed through rush hour Thursday for a very serious collision. Two women of unknown ages were killed.

Police say that a driver in a red car collided with a green car, killing both of its occupants.

"The red Dodge Charger that you see behind us was northbound at a high rate of speed, according to witnesses, and may have run a red light at that location," said Phoenix Police Sgt. Trent Crump.

Witnesses say the green Toyota Corolla was waiting in the intersection to make a left turn when the Charger came speeding down the street and slammed into them.

"We seen the Charger going like 90 miles an hour heading north flying," said witness Elvira Reyes. "We just froze, I just froze up in the car like oh my god that could have been us that could've died today cause we were supposed to turn before them."

The driver of the Charger, an adult male, was hospitalized and impairment is believed to have been a factor.

"We have information that the driver of one vehicle is showing signs and symptoms of impairment, so we believe that alcohol and/or drugs is a factor in this collision as well," said Crump.

Motorists were asked to avoid the area while police investigated. No names have been released.
