PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. -

A 31-year-old Prescott Valley man was found dead Monday after officers responded to a welfare check on two young children.

Officers arrived at the apartment just before 7 p.m. after someone called to report children had been throwing things from their second story balcony for hours.

The 3- and 2-year-old had been throwing bottles of water, cans, knives, and other miscellaneous items.

When officers arrived, the kids would not open the door to them, so they made entry through a window. Once inside, they located their 31-year-old father deceased.

The toddlers apparently fed themselves fruit snacks and may have been throwing the items to get someone's attention.

The man's death is under investigation. It's possible that drugs may have played a role. By the time officers arrived, the man may have been dead for 4 to 5 hours.

The children were transferred to the care of CPS.

The children's biological mom is deceased and there is other family that can take care of them, according to the Prescott Valley Police Department.

The man's name hasn't been released.
